Her first mixtape was geared toward hiphop loves in the underground scene now im seeing that mixtapes are more on a today commercial side. Why is that? Kstarr replies”i represent hiphop and the story of it, today. I’m not just about underground or commercial or the south, its about everyones voice and to say im only putting out mixtapes for the underground hiphop heads is to say that i only hear their voice, and thats wrong i hear the voices of every one. The voice of the dude on the corner spiitng bars in the cold, the dudes walking aroung with skinny jeans riding skate boards, the dudes on the dirty backpack movement spitting about love and shit. i hear it all”

I do belive that kstarr is the only female dj that is dropping mixtapes on the street and having the dealers buy them from her. Kstarr do you have a day job? she replies” fuck a day job or a 9-5, I live ,breath, and eat music, and in return it feeds me just enough to stay a float and plan the next move.”

This is Kstarrs’ second cd to be releashed on the street but her fourth cd in total.

So how is your mixtape different from the mixtape thats out there?

she replies” my mixtapes are different one because they are mine and im different, you cant see, i rock a tatoo around my entire neck, a lip ring and my face just looks different,lol” I cant reveal what i do just yet, but i have a very good ear for music, that alot of people think they have, but they actually don’t. I also belive in breaking records, yeah im going to give you whats out and hot but nowadays alot of djs are afraid to break a record and im not. If its hot im going to play it, word.” Real dj break records which i am. I am alos about of greenhitz djs from atl and we all break records which each other, becasue as a dj you really want to saty current, and you can be yesterday easy.

How are u feeling about the hiphop game now? “Well i don’t feel like hiphop is dead i just feel like it taking a break,lol

DJ KStarr has been in a love affair with hip hop from the first moment she heard What More Can I Say by MC Milk B and his brother DJ Giz on the streets of Bedstuy. Live, passionate and fearless, her prowess over the turntables is history in birth.

From playing drums in the church choir, to making beats with her boy, while others would hear music—KStarr would feel it: the melodies, notes and souls of sound.  A drummer, mixologist, creator and producer, her mastery of beat and rhythm came from the early sounds of Nina Simone, Anita Baker, Kurtis Blow, Africa Bambatta and Tribe Called Quest. With two rusted out turntables and a bunch of two dollar records, DJ KStarr began spinning real music for real people.

The rest was history.

Always unexpected, real and tight, her spinning has put her into high demand all over the city. In the last few years, DJKstarr has come up from spinning rusted out turntables at house parties for free, to rocking some of the fiercest clubs in New York.  Including spots like Maracas, Club Vesta, Opaline, Brown Sugar, Brown Sugar Supper Club, Club Spills, Fuel Ray, The Door Lounge, Club Alibi, Spin Radio FM, Fat Baby, Julani Lounge, The Lab, Clubs out of state, club tuts, the Parrot, and llegamos radio home of “the rundown” which is the hottest hiphop internet radio station in nyc. While spinning for the Hot 97.1 party last year and for rah digga who was once party of bust ryhmes flipmode squad kstarr began working on her mixtape called “listen up” Da wake Up call” dedicated to the real hiphop lovers and to the people that need to be woke up.  At 26, Kstarr is one of the youngest, hungriest DJs out there, and she is pushing to take over not only NYC, but the entire globe.
